Purpose Statement: Conversion "therapy" (sometimes referred to as "reparative therapy," "sexual orientation change efforts," or "gender identity change efforts") refers to any methods that aim to change a person's sexual orientation and/or gender identity (adapted from American Psychological Association, 2009). While research has found conversion “therapy” to be ineffective and even harmful (American Psychological Association, 2009), these treatments can still be performed legally on minors in most states, including here in Tennessee (Human Rights Campaign, 2020). Therefore, the purpose of this project is to raise awareness about these practices, breaking the silence on conversion “therapy” in Tennessee. With your permission, your story will be included on a website where people can learn about conversion “therapy” survivors’ experiences. Your story may also help Tennessee Equality Project to support legislation outlawing the practice of conversion “therapy” on minors in our state.
